Jeff Shaara is most widely known for writing in the historical fiction genre. He began as a professional writer in 1993 during the filming of Gettysburg, a film based on his father’s novel, The Killer Angels. After being approached regarding continuing his father’s legacy, Mr. Shaara wrote both a prequel (The Last Full Measure) and a sequel (Gone for Soldiers) to his father’s book, rounding out the central novel’s narrative. In content, the novels are described as veering away from his father’s approach of focusing on the psychological growth of the characters in the text in that he spends a lot of time focusing on the historical elements in the novel.

According to his biography, his intention was never to become a writer, but by the turn of the millennia, he has come to be considered one of the most prolific American writers of the twenty-first century. While the Civil War is the backdrop to a number of his novels, he has also written about WWI (To the Last Man and No Less Than Victory), WWII (The Steel Wave and The Rising Tide: A Novel of the Second World War).
